😖 STRESS. A problem people often have when they think about their current results, is that they tend to only focus on the physiological stress places on their body. They tend to focus on sets, reps, training volume, frequency etc. It's easy to focus on these variables, because we can control them. However, your body is not a simple machine that can just work off numbers of produce the expected output. Most people have a whole host of external stressors going on at any given time. And they can increase or decrease on a day to day basis. Think work stress, money worries, relationship stress. The list goes on! It's easy to shrug these things off when thinking about our training progress. But unfortunately, the accumulation of all these stressors certainly has an impact on our results. We know that during times of high stress, our body releases a hormone called Cortisol, which can be beneficial, but when elevated for a long time, it can play havoc with our ability to recover, build muscle, lose fat, sleep well, and lift heavy. In fact, there have now been several studies showing reduced strength gains, and recovery of muscular function in highly stressed individuals when compared to counterparts with low stress levels. The more stress you have in other areas of life, the less you should allocate to training. It is futile going all-out in the gym during a really tough period of your life, it's a recipe for burnout. The key is to try and find ways to reduce, or manage the other stressors in a manner that works for you. If you are able to do this, you'll likely find more energy and enthusiasm for the gym. Not to mention greater results.
